If you wish to enroll in an undergraduate/license program at the University of the Azores, and you are not Portuguese or from any other state of the European Union, you must apply to the Special Admission Contest, specifically designed for you.

The Special Admission Contest for International Students is meant for students who cumulatively:

  1. Do not have Portuguese nationality;
  2. Hold a qualification that allows them to apply to higher education in Portugal or a Portuguese secondary school diploma or legally equivalent qualification.

The International Student Status is NOT meant for:

  1. Citizens from Portugal or from other States of the European Union;
  2. Family members of Portuguese nationals nor European Union member State nationals,  regardless of their nationality;
  3. Foreign students who legally live in Portugal for more than two straight years up to January 1st of the year in which they apply to higher education, as well as any descendants with whom they legally live;
  4.  Beneficiaries, on January 1st 2020, of the equal rights and duties status, under the international treaty granted between the Portuguese State and the State of which they are nationals;
  5. Foreign students who attend the UAc under international student mobility programs;
  6. Foreign students applying to higher education through the special admission contests regulated by Decree-Law 393-A/99, of October 2, amended by Decree-Law 272/2009, of October 1;
  7. Foreign students enrolled in the UAc before the school year of 2020/2021, who are equivalent to Portuguese students until completion, without interruption, of their study program.




The entry conditions are established by the Regulation of the Special Admission Competition for International Students.
If you have a Portuguese secondary education diploma or equivalent, you must undertake the national exams required for the undergraduate program/bachelor that you which to apply to.
If you have a secondary education diploma or equivalent from a foreign country, you’re required to have undertaken state exams (read “Exam excuses”).
If you did not undertake state exams in subjects equivalent to the ones required for the undergraduate program/bachelor that you which to apply to, you may produce evidence of the attendance and approval in those subjects or choose to take the Portuguese national entrance exam as an external student.
In any case, you are always required to have language proficiency in Portuguese or English (depending on the language in which the course is taught) equivalent to level B2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Alternatively, the verification of language skills may be accomplished by documentary evidence or through a written and oral exam.
You must also meet the entry requirements set for the specific undergraduate program/bachelor that you which to apply to under the general system of access and enrolment in Portuguese Universities/Polytechnics.


If you approved in any of the following exams no later than three years before your application, you are excused of doing other exams.

Also if you approved in any final exam from this list considered to be equivalent to the Portuguese one(s) required for the undergraduate program/bachelor that you which to apply to you are not required to do any extra exams.


Classes are taught in Portuguese. If you do not have a B2 level of proficiency in Portuguese, the UAc provides an intensive complementary course of Portuguese Foreign Language, free of charge. You must apply when you fill in your application form.
Teachers may authorize essays/paper works, examinations or oral presentations in English. Also, the list of recommended literature in most subjects contains a sufficient number of articles/books in English.

*The tuition for the 3rd, 4th and 5th years is the one in use in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto.

Tuition may be paid up to 10 installments.


  • Application fee is 50€ non-refundable. Applicants living in Portugal may pay through ATM or in the treasury services at the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada or Angra do Heroísmo; applicants living abroad may pay by credit card safely and without any additional costs.
  • Enrollment fee is 20€ non-refundable.

Each year, you can apply to three graduation programs/bachelor programs, indicating your preference. The application fee is €50.00 (euros), non-refundable.
Make sure you have these documents with you when you fill in your application:

  1. Copy of an identification card/passport, that clearly indicates the nationality of the applicant;
  2. Honor statement that the applicant does not have Portuguese nationality nor is covered by the Decree-Law 36/2010, of March 10 (no. 2 and 3);
  3. Document proving the Portuguese 12th grade High School diploma or equivalent foreign qualification, stating the final grade, duly validated by the competent authority in each case.Depending on each case, candidates must also attach the applicable documents, according to the following conditions:
  4. Candidates who have completed admission exams for foreign higher education recognized by the University of the Azores (ENEM, Vestibular, Gaokao, Liankao, Exame Unificado de Acesso, Ser Bachiller, Examen de Estado) must attach to the application the document proving the final score(s), duly validated by a competent authority of that country;
  5. Candidates with foreign academic qualifications that gives access to higher education in the home country, not covered by the previous number, must attach to the application a document proving that qualification, duly validated by a competent authority of that country;
  6. Foreign candidates who have successfully completed admission exams for higher education in Portugal as self-proposed must attach to the application the document proving the final score(s) obtained in the exam(s);
  7. Candidates who have approved courses abroad considered homologous(2) to the entrance exams and suitable for the undergraduation/integrated master application must attach to the application the document proving the contents and final score obtained in the course(s), duly validated by a competent authority of that country, unless the applicable law, at the application´s date, provides for the dismissal of such document.

(2)The homologous courses are established annually by the National Commission of Higher Education Admission in accordance to no. 20-A of Decree-Law 296-A/98, of September 25, republished by Decree-Law 90/2008, of May 30.


After publication of the application results, proceed to formalize your registration within the period specified in the notice.
For this purpose, you must pay the registration fee (€ 20), as well as school insurance € 3.08 (upgradable value annually).
